Please find below a list of speed camera sites and information for the UK, obviously i do not encourage speeding or anything like that. Please note that this list is by no means definitive, it is upto date to todays date 23/6/99 obviously the Police can install new systems over night. Also it only covers the fixed Gatso devices and not mobile Gatso's or Plod's with the guns.

PENALTY - for speeding, EXCEEDING SPEED LIMIT
1) up to 15MPH over the posted limit:- fine, £ 44.00 plus £ 30 costs, 3 penalty points
2) 16 to 25 MPH over the posted limit:-fine, £ 45.00 to £ 100 + £ 30 costs, 4 ppts
3) 26-35 MPH over the posted limit:- fine £ 45.00 to £ 200 + £ 30 costs 5 or 6 ppts
4) 36 + MPH over the posted limit:- fine £ 67.00 to £ 300 + £ 30 costs, disqualification min 1 month, maximum 12 months.

Police do have the power to issue a fixed penalty of £ 40 + 3 ppts, but NOT in regard to GATSO speed cameras. They must come to court. The above are entry points. Each case will be looked at individually, (time of day, road, weather conditions etc) Also, each offence on the same day, but at different places can mean that you can be a "Totter" i.e. 12 points is immedate disqualification. These points stay on you record for 3 years, and can be used in those three years to tot up the points!

For a company to fail to identify a speedercaught on camera, they can be fined £ 200 plus costs and 3ppts on the company owner/secretary.

The fine is now based upon the financial circumstances of the offender, leading to payment within 12 months. If you are a visitor from outside the UK, you will be brought before a court as soon as possible. Any amount of points will be applied to your UK driving record, not to your driving licence. However you may be banned from driving any motor vehicle in the UK as well. Any fine on a foreign visitor MUST be paid straight away, and the Justices will, in most circumstances keep you in jail until the fine is paid.

I have been reliably informed by a senior police officer, that two consecutive pictures are required in order to prosecute offenders in the UK. This is so that the actual speed can be calculated from knowing the time delay between photos and the distance traveled between photos. Acording to this officer you don't show up on the second photo if you are doing over 145mph!! cos you are out of shot by the time it is taken!! Don't know if this is true, any bikers want to try! {I would prefer people find better ways to defeat the cams}

Caution!

If you agree with the above, read on...

Note: Directions, N, NE, E etc refer to the direction of traffic attacked by the device. B indicates both directions and R is for a reversible device.

A4010 - M40 link road - High Wycombe. Roughly 2 miles from M40 Limit 30mph. Direction S. You go up a steep hill with a steep shrub & grass bank to your left and houses to your right that are very well set back from the road on the right. No pedestrian hazard at all, no junctions, perfectly safe to do 45-50mph, and everyone does. Then houses start on the left, quite close to the road but there are trees everywhere so you wouldn't know unless someone told you. Camera is hidden in trees.

A49 London Road North Bound between Stretton and stockton heath nr Warrington just belore Warrington golf club 40 mph limit

NB: Are the above two reports referring to the same site?

A6 Northbound 30mph. High Lane, Disley. You are likely to get caught at quiet times when higher speeds are safe.

A500, Hough. Travelling from Nantwich towards the M6, there is a point at Hough (approaching the old hump-backed bridge, which is now a double bridge) where the speed limit drops from 60 to 30. A patrol car is sometimes hidden in a lane just over the bridge, obviously invisible from the approach, with a radar trap. They tend to be there at quiet times: Sunday afternoons, weekday mid-mornings etc, and will issue an
on-the-spot penalty.

Cornwall

A30 Westbound, Goss Moor. (West of Bodmin) On the single carriageway section between Bodmin and Fraddon/Indian Queens, to the west of the low rail bridge, after the Newquay turn. Cumbria

M6 North of Kendal, north or southbound, small unmarked white van with tripod mounted laser operating from open side panel door.

Derbyshire

Please note latest dodge spotted on the A626 near the village of Marple in Derbyshire. This road; much of which used to be 60mph, is now all 40mph or 30mph. A dark blue Pickfords style furniture van was parked on the offside, facing the traffic flow. I came at it from behind, so its open rear doors disclosed the contents: police radar.

Devon

South Molton A361 Westbound. 60mph. Located on sweeping left hander on downhill section shortly before a junction where road temporarily opens out to dual carriageway. Located too early to benefit the junction and you would have to be really moving to get in any trouble because visibility is fine.

This seems to be the only camera between Tiverton and Bideford and the A39 all the way through Bridewater also seems clear.

A380 N 70mph a few miles before joining the A38 on crest of hill in wooded area. Camera on left side.

A30 Westbound Near Okehampton. Located on the side of the westbound carriage way immediately after an overbridge at the bottom of a dip. Reported live 1998/09/22
Also traffic police with hand-held radar have been known to be trapping people in both directions. (Eastbound this is located after the steep hill past the first Okehampton turn off)

A30 Eastbound. 8 Miles west of Launceston. Two cameras both located in the central reservation at 'on the level' intersections. Easily anticipated/spotted. Warning sign before the first, also a distance sign stating "Launceston 8" First camera is at the bottom of a big dip. Junction is for a highways depot. The second is at the Kennards House junction.

A30 Eastbound. In addition there is a camera located in one of the villages between Honiton and J29 of the M5. Obvious statement but the my personal rule here is to always obey reduced speed limits on this stretch of road. Derestricted sections are no problem.

Essex

A580 East Lancs Road between M6 and Manchester. Speed limits of 70, 60, 50, 40, 30 (it's a long road!). Surrey

A243 Northbound, North of junction 9 of M25. Just before Chessington, in 40mph limit about 100yds before 30mph limit begins. Ludicrous new 40mph limit.

All of these are totally unreasonable, nos 1 and 3 being blatant revenue generators.

A22 Blindley Heath. 40mph down long straight hill, 200 yds before petrol station, Southbound. THIS IS A STEALTH SITE with three rubber strips inserted in road and a post in the hedge into which a mobile camera can be plugged. A287 N, Frensham village (south of Farnham) 30mph. This is a STEALTH SITE located 50yds after you go over a small humpback bridge opposite a junction. This is very difficult to see indeed as the post is hidden. There are plenty of warning signs, including one at the exact location.

A2021 Eastbourne (towards sea front) - located in 30 mph zone approaching District General Hospital.

Sussex Police have at least one MOBILE Gatso unit. Its a tripod-mounted affair that they carry around in a white Vauxhaul Corsa-type van with "Sussex Police Speed Management" written on the side. Favourite places I have seen this unit in action are:

A259 eastbound at Roedean School (50mph 4lane single carriageway)Falmer Road southbound at Woodingdean (sitting in Happy Valley Park car park)sitting on the bridge just north of Stenning ( dont know the road number) on the bridge just north of Tates garage on the A23King George the Fifth Avenue, Hove.Shoreham Beach, tucked beside Emerald Quay

Teesside

A19 Roadworks between A689 (Bishop Auckland), and A174 (Whitby) (Thornaby/Stockton/Middlesborough Area)
At least one mobile GATSO with at least 3 sites in each direction. Confirmed southbound locations include just after the A1027 Norton entry slip road where a cycle lane runs parallel, and in the area immediately after the A66 exit ramps.
All locations have road markings, and some locations have specially prepared concrete hard standing areas to the side of the carriageway.

Mobile Gatso operating near Sunderland, they have white Astra vans and set it up in front. Gets cars at 83mph and wagons at 65mph, they can also do both carriageways. In 5 minutes there it took over 200 pictures, and it is not at a dangerous spot, also slightly downhill, so the wagons don't stand a chance.
